neighbors of the gunman and his mother spoke with jackie who join us on the phone. what are you hearing? >> reporter: not exactly the type of thing you would expect to encounter in a situation like this. when the neighbors learned of the name of the suspect and the victim in this shooting, they basically reacted by bursting into tears. they knew mr. davis and his mother who was in her 90s. he was well known in this neighborhood for the exquisite pair they say that he took of his mother who has apparently something very alzheimer's-like. she would wander off. and everyone in the neighborhood respected him very, vy much for the care that he took of his mother. so they are very shocked by this. horrified. th certainly say they don't believe there is anything that would condone doing this. as one neighbor told me, this is the la man in the world i would ever expt to do this. when we get more information, we have interviews with neighbors and things like, that i will bring those to you as soon as possible. >> all right. thank you. >>> tonight we're getting a firsthand account of the terrifyi

a male. they ve not released his name and they havenot told us whether he was driving or a passenger on the bus. but they did tell us they have to notify the famiy. i want to step out of the way, because i want to show y -- i want to show you the hov flyaway because at this point what we know i that this 26 passenger wolfbus, this tour bus, shortly around 4:00 was leaving the d.c. area traveli northbound and somehow someway it left the roadway completely, went airborne, hit the em bankment. at some point after tt it rested on a jersey wall north of the democracy boulevard on northbound 270 here, resng on the jersey wall. earlier we thought it hit cars sp upon impact. it did not happen. there were at least two cars that hit trying to swerve the light st. again, as you mentioned, 12 people taken to the hospital. four of them are in critical condition. wi talked to a woman right after we arrived on the scene here who was travel behd the bus. she became part of the rescue effort. let's take a listen as to what she had to say. >> we had to stop. we were calling 911 and help

had four devices on him. there were two propane tanks, the kind you would use going camping. the propane tank hz pipe with shotgun shells attached. i had pipe bombs that contained fireworks type explosive. >> reporter: for nearly four hours, lee held a security guard and two employees hostage. when an nbc news producer called discovery's general line, lee picked up the telephone and started talking. >> i have a gun and i have a bomb. i have several bombs strapped to my body ready to go off. i have a device that if i drop it, if i drop it -- i'll explode. >> reporter: the stand-off came to an end when police say lee pointed a gun at the hostages, prompting s.w.a.t. team members to open fire. lee was killed. overnight, police continued to collect physical evidence in the building. officers could be seen in the lobby and searching the bushes around the entrance. as morning wore on, investigators loaded bags and boxes of evidence into a waiting van. a section of wayne avenue remains closed this morning while the building has been given the all-clear, police continue to control t

went on there. >> at this time i was not in view of it so i can't comment on that. >> can you tell us how many shooters there were and was it just one shot? >> i'm sorry. what was the question? >> how many shooters were there? snipers were there? >> i don't know yet. that is still under investigation. >> the suspect in this case was arrested as a result of a protest, i guess, at discovery in february of 2008. as a result of that arrest, he was charged with disorderly conduct. he was convicted and serve ad ten-day sentence for disorderly conduct for the protest he did here. he was taking homeless individuals and paying them sum of money to protest with him at the site of this building. as a condition of this probation in 2008, he was ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from the discovery building. his probation ended two weeks ago. >> david, do you expect to be back open for business tomorrow morning? >> we'll be communicating with employees later tonight. it is an active crime scene. >> [ inaudible ]. >> at this time we need to get back to the command post. we thank you very much.
